Prepare Your Family For An Emergency

A home emergency kit can be essential to your family's well being during a disaster, so having one is crucial. Think back on the millions of people along the East Coast who lost power for days because of Sandy. Could you survive such a situation?

We all hope that this will never happen to us. Still, an emergency kit should be prepared in case something like this happens in your area. If there is some sort of disaster, these are some of the items that should be prepared:

Flashlights. Don't skimp on the flashlight, get a high quality one that is not rechargeable. Keep in mind that it could be days until your power is restored. Have plenty of spare batteries in the kit, and replace them periodically if they are close to their expiration dates. If you're comfortable with a kerosene lamp, that's not a bad option, either. It's also wise to have plenty of candles, and of course, matches.

Hand sanitizer is another important item. Water can become contaminated, so it may be a while before you will be able to wash your hands normally. In order to avoid germs and to stay clean, have paper towels and hand sanitizer ready for use at all times.

It's crucial to have a car adapter. You can use this to recharge your electronics, including your smartphone, so that you can have communication that you will definitely need.

Bottled water is essential. When water is not fit for washing, it certainly isn't fit for drinking. Staying hydrated is crucial, so be sure there is at least one extra case of water in your home. You can never have too much drinkable water, and if there is a major storm warning like a hurricane, stock up as much as you can.

Your emergency kit's food supply should be enough for a minimum of two weeks. You'll need canned food, crackers, peanut butter and other items that don't have to be refrigerated. A gas grill could come in handy also, so that you have a way to cook. Some spare gasoline should be stored safely. Of course don't forget to put an old-fashioned can opener in your kit. Gather together some plastic bowls, utensils, cups, and paper plates for your kit.

A well stocked first aid kit is essential. Your first aid kit should include pain relievers, bandages, gauze, allergy pills, gastrointestinal medicine, antibiotic ointments and other things that are specific to your family's specific medical conditions. You should also have all your prescriptions in order.

If you don't have sleeping bags for everyone, you should purchase some. Remember, you could be without a bed for some time. Sleeping bags can add some comfort - and warmth - if you're forced out of your home temporarily.

If you have no power, these items can't make up for that. But these things will make the time you spend without power much less difficult, and your family will be safer and healthier until life gets back to normal.
